Do You Know What FIPS 201 Is?
Perhaps you should, suggests Jake Jacobs, president of Brea,
Calif.-based Avenue-One Inc. Without the extensive bureaucratic definition, FIPS 201 is a
new program for improving the identification of federal employees and
contractors, and authenticating access to federal facilities and information
systems. OK, so much for avoiding the bureaucracy: What does this mean for the promotional products industry?
Jacobs hopes millions of dollars. For the past 50 years, ID cards have been “slot-punched,”
which is the process of making a small, rectangular hole in order to attach the
item to clothing, lanyards or clips. The new regulations are making
slot-punching a thing of the past.
Besides the cost of the slot-punch machine — plus labor —
the process has a tendency to irreparably damage and break cards. Breaking a
simple PVC ID card with an employee’s photo on it is one thing; however,
breaking a Smart ID Card with an expensive, electronic chip embedded inside is
quite another.
With the new Smart ID Card technology being implemented by the
government and other commercial applications, the slot-punch is quickly becoming
an antiquated process. Consequently, the new government policies all but
eliminate certain clips and rings that used to attach the cards to their owners.
This provides a unique challenge for the industry: If split rings and clips can no longer be used on ID cards,
who will create a new way to keep ID cards attached to the employee?
Avenue-One offers a Card Clamp that is available on a number
of badge-holder products including lanyards, retractable reels and a simple
clip-on holder.
It’s estimated that when the new regulations are enforced,
50 million government employees and subcontractors will need a way to carry
their ID cards, creating a huge opportunity for distributors.
“The idea is to help educate the distributor sales force
about this new requirement and arm them with sample product,” Jacobs explains.
He says this will allow them to demonstrate the product “amongst the various
federal and commercial end users who, in many cases, don’t yet know about this
new federal standard.”
