Case Study in a Years of Service Award Program

03/22/2007

Jill Albers is a brand manager for Celina, Ohio-based Visions Awards and Awardcraft. Visit www.visionsawards.com and www.awardcraft.com .

A technology company wanted to develop a “years of service” recognition program for its employees. This company faced a unique challenge because each award needed to be drop-shipped to various locations and the company wanted each recipient’s supervisor to present each award during a celebration ceremony. Furthermore, due to the large size of the company, they wanted to standardize the event so each recipient received the same celebration with his or her award.

The company also granted stock to each employee who received a years of service award. For example, if an employee was being recognized for five years of service, then he or she received five shares of the company’s stock. The awards were given out for five, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 years of service.

Design Process

The client selected the 4011/NEV (available from both Visions Awards and Awardcraft) for the plaque component. The award was designed to look like a company stock share with the number of years of service and the awardee’s name in the center. To facilitate the celebration aspect, a box was designed including the award, a card, the stock certificate, balloons, confetti and a banner. This “celebration box” was to be delivered to the supervisor of each recipient. The supervisor would then open the box and find directions on top to go online and see how the service award should be presented.

Included in the service award package you will find: a card, a stock share certificate, a plaque, balloons, a banner and confetti. Please sign the card, blow up the balloons and place them around the awardee’s desk, sprinkle the confetti on the awardee’s desk, place the banner about his or her desk and set the plaque up on his or her desk. Please send an e-mail to the department in which the awardee works, and call a meeting to present their service award. Announce how many years he or she has been employed by Technology Company and that he or she has received shares of Technology Company stock for his or her hard work and dedication thoughout the past ___ years.

Results

The Technology Company reduced turnover by 7 percent in the following year, and 9 percent the year after. This has been an ongoing recognition program for more than eight years, and Technology Company has also implemented other similar programs to recognize employees due to its success.
