EPA Relaxes Definition of Solid Waste

10/10/2008

The Environmental Protection Agency recently relaxed the definition of solid waste, which will make it easier for small businesses to recycle industrial byproducts. This change could result in small-business savings of $107 million a year.

New rules allow businesses to reclaim certain secondary hazardous materials they have created. Businesses can also transfer the materials to another company for reclamation, or petition the EPA or a state agency on a case-by-case basis to determine if their solid waste is reclaimable. Under old regulations, some recyclable materials were automatically considered hazardous, requiring costly removal and disposal.
