Large Retailers Boycott Cotton Picked with Forced Chile Labor

10/28/2008

Wal-Mart and UK-based Tesco have asked their suppliers to stop using cotton from the former Soviet country, Uzbekistan, ASI reports. The move is part of a joint effort to ban Uzbek cotton because of allegations of forced child labor in the country.

The boycott has been organized by several trade groups, including the National Retail Federation. They have pleaded with the Uzbekistan Embassy for an immediate end to the current labor practices. Advocacy groups have also called for apparel manufacturers to label clothing with the cotton’s country of origin. Uzbekistan is the third-largest exporter of cotton in the world, producing a crop worth more than $1 billion annually.
