Teacher Sells Ads … On His Tests

12/04/2008

A suburban San Diego high school teacher found a new way to raise money for the school: by selling ads on his tests. He says this new measure helps cover the cost of printing them.

The idea came to him after he learned that budget cuts meant he’d have a tight allowance for in-school printing — just $316 per year. The teacher estimates that printing quizzes and tests for his 167 students would run in the neighborhood of $500.

During a September back-to-school night, he proposed the idea to parents. For $10 a quiz, $20 a test or $30 for a final exam (in a check payable to the school’s math department), parents could choose a quote or business advertisement to appear on the test. Of the seven he’s sold, five were quotes and two were ads from local businesses.
